Ex-drummer for USA rock band, The Flaming Lips, Kliph Scurlock now plays with Gruff Rhys and has moved to Wales.

What was your first experience of Welsh music?

My first experience was hearing "Merched Yn Neud Gwallt Ei Gilydd" by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci.  Well, it was the entire Introducing Gorky's Zygotic Mynci album, which was a U.S. released compilation of stuff up through 1995.  Being a dumb kid at the time, I didn't realize that there was a Welsh language and thought Euros was singing in some made up language for half of the record.  I had a much smarter friend who told me, "no, they're singing in Welsh."

Who was your favourite Welsh language band or musician whilst growing up?

Yeah....can't answer that as my introduction was Gorky's and I was 22 or 23 when I first heard them.

What is your favourite Welsh language album or song ever?

Song would probably be "Lan A Lawr" by Meic Stevens and album would be Mwng by Super Furry Animals.  I'd be tempted to name a Gorky's album, but they never recorded an album all is Welsh and SFA is my all-time favourite band, so.....

What’s the best Welsh language music performance you have ever seen?

Ooh, that's tough, I'd probably have to go with Gwenno there.

Has Welsh language music influenced your life in any way?

In many, many ways.  First off, I love the language and have made several attempts to learn it.  I've not gotten very far with it but I'm planning on moving to Wales so hopefully I can try one more time to learn it.

Falling in love with Gorky's, and through them SFA, Meic Stevens, Datblygu, etc., etc. created this curiosity in me about Wales in general. I was there a couple of times with the Flaming Lips and just loved it and felt a contentment there that I've never felt elsewhere. I finally got to spend little over a month there last summer when Gruff Rhys invited me over to tour.  We were playing mostly festivals, so I had weeks off to wander around and meet people and just really, really fell in love with it.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Well, at this exact moment, I'm listening to Barafundle by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, which does have a few Welsh-language tracks on it.  But I've been listening to Gwenno's album a lot lately.

Finish this sentence ‘Without Welsh language music...’

...... Welsh people wouldn't have some stinky American like me living in your midst in the near future!'
